Pap Smear In Dubai
In Trusta Clinic Dubai, we truly care about the health of every woman, and this begins with ensuring that you have the chance to receive the preventive care that really matters to you. Our Pap Smear service, which is otherwise known as the Pap test or cervical cytology, is a quick, reliable, and potentially life-saving procedure that we have designed to be comfortable and totally confidential, with a warm and experienced team of gynaecologists by your side every step of the way.
We understand that sometimes, catching things before they become serious can change everything, which is why a routine Pap smear is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself, giving the specialists the chance to detect abnormal cells on your cervix before they ever have the chance to become anything more serious, giving you the best possible outcome that every woman deserves.
What Is a Pap Smear?
A Pap smear is a simple, quick, and minimally invasive procedure where cells are collected from the cervix, which is the narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. These cells are then analyzed under a microscope to check if there are abnormal cell changes, which can indicate cancer, precancer, and infections.
A Pap smear does not diagnose cancer. It is a screening tool that identifies cellular changes early, allowing your gynecologist to intervene before a condition progresses.
Why Is a Pap Smear Important?
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when detected early. Regular Pap smear testing can detect abnormal cells before they become cancerous, giving you the opportunity to treat them early and protect your long term health.
In addition to screening for cancer, a Pap smear can detect precancerous cells that may pose a future risk. Early identification of these changes allows for timely intervention and dramatically increases the chances of a full recovery.
The test is also used to identify:
- Cervical cell changes caused by HPV infection
- Inflammation or infection of the cervical tissue
- Low grade or high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL)
- Cellular abnormalities such as atypical squamous cells or glandular cells
Who Should Get a Pap Smear and How Often?
Pap smear screening is recommended for all women with a cervix, beginning from age 21. The frequency of testing depends on your age, health history, and specific risk factors.
General screening guidelines:
Ages 21 to 29: A Pap test every 3 years
Ages 30 to 64: A Pap test every 3 years, or co testing (Pap + HPV) every 5 years
Age 65 and above: Screening may be discontinued after consultation with your doctor if previous results have been consistently normal
Your doctor may recommend more frequent testing if you have any of the following risk factors:
- A history of smoking
- A positive HPV test result
- Prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES)
- A previous diagnosis of cervical cancer or precancerous changes
- A weakened immune system due to HIV or immunosuppressive medications
If you have had a total hysterectomy for a non cancerous reason, you may not require ongoing Pap smear testing. Our gynaecologists will advise you on the best course of action based on your individual circumstances.
How to Prepare for Your Pap Smear
To ensure the most accurate results possible, we recommend the following before your appointment:
- Avoid sexual intercourse for 24 to 48 hours before the test
- Avoid inserting vaginal creams, suppositories, or medicines for 2 days prior to the test
- Do not use vaginal douches, sprays, or lubricants for a minimum of 48 hours beforehand
- Ideally schedule your test when you are not menstruating. While testing during your period is possible, results are more reliable outside of it
If you have any questions or concerns ahead of your appointment, our clinic team is happy to assist. Simply contact us early for personalised guidance.
What to Expect During the Procedure
A Pap smear is performed in our private, comfortable clinic room by one of our qualified gynaecologists. The procedure is brief and straightforward:
Step 1: Positioning: You will be asked to lie on your back on the examination table, with your knees bent and feet placed in stirrups for support.
Step 2: Speculum insertion: Your doctor will gently insert a small instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This holds the vaginal walls open to provide a clear view of the cervix. You may feel mild pressure or slight discomfort.
Step 3: Cell collection: Using a soft brush and a small spatula, your doctor will gently collect a sample of cells from the surface of the cervix. This step takes only a few seconds.
Step 4: Sample preparation: The collected cells are placed into a liquid preservation solution and sent to a certified laboratory for analysis.
Most women find the procedure to be quick and well tolerated. Some may experience mild spotting or minor discomfort for a short time afterward, which typically resolves within a day.
After Your Pap Smear
You can return to your normal daily activities immediately following the procedure. There is no required downtime or recovery period.
Your results will typically be available within 1 to 3 weeks. Our team will contact you as soon as the report is ready and will guide you through the next steps, whether that involves reassurance that everything is normal, or recommendations for follow up care if any abnormalities are detected.
Understanding Your Results
Negative (Normal) Result
A negative result means that no abnormal cells were detected in the cervical sample. This is the most common outcome and indicates that your cervical health is in good shape. No further action is required until your next scheduled screening.
Positive (Abnormal) Result
A positive result does not necessarily mean you have cancer. It simply indicates that some cells appeared different from normal. Depending on the type of abnormality identified, your doctor may recommend:
- A repeat Pap smear after a short monitoring period
- An HPV test to identify the presence of high risk virus strains
- A colposcopy, a detailed examination of the cervix using a magnifying instrument, to assess the extent of any cellular changes
Some abnormal results, particularly low grade changes, may resolve naturally on their own, especially in younger women. High grade changes, however, may require treatment to prevent progression to cancer. Your Trusta Clinic gynaecologist will explain your results clearly and discuss all available options with you.
Inconclusive Result
In some cases, results may be unclear due to insufficient cells or other factors such as recent spotting. Your doctor will advise on the best course of action, which may include a repeat test.
Pap Smear Combined with HPV Testing
Trusta Clinic also offers combined Pap smear and HPV testing (co-testing) for women aged 25 and above. Since the majority of cervical cancers are caused by certain high-risk strains of the Human Papillomavirus, testing for HPV alongside the Pap smear provides an added layer of assurance.
If HPV is detected, your doctor will interpret this result in the context of your Pap smear findings and overall health profile to determine the most appropriate next steps. Early identification of HPV allows for closer monitoring and timely management before any cellular changes become clinically significant.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Pap smear painful?
Most women describe the sensation as mild pressure or brief discomfort rather than pain. The procedure is very quick, typically lasting less than 5 minutes. Our doctors take care to make the experience as comfortable as possible for every patient.
Can I get a Pap smear during my period?
While it is technically possible, we recommend scheduling your test outside of your menstrual period for the most accurate results. If you experience unexpected bleeding that is not related to your period, please do not delay your appointment.
Do I need a Pap smear if I have received the HPV vaccine?
Yes. The HPV vaccine protects against the most common high risk strains of HPV, but it does not cover all strains linked to cervical cancer. Regular Pap smear screening remains an important part of your preventive health routine even if you have been vaccinated.
What if I have never been sexually active?
While the risk of cervical cancer is significantly lower in women who have never been sexually active, a Pap smear may still be recommended depending on your age and individual health profile. Please speak with our gynaecologist for personalised advice.
How soon will I receive my results?
Results are typically available within 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the laboratory. Our team will contact you as soon as your report is ready and provide a clear, easy to understand explanation of your findings.
Is the Pap smear test available for non UAE residents?
Yes. Trusta Clinic welcomes patients of all nationalities and residency statuses. Our team is multilingual and experienced in supporting international patients visiting Dubai.
