Trim or Wedge? The Two Labiaplasty Techniques
There are two established methods, and they produce different edges. Your surgeon recommends one after examining you.
The trim method
Excess tissue is removed along the outer edge, then closed. It is the most widely performed technique, and it gives excellent size reduction along the full length. The trade-off is that the naturally darker border is removed, so the new edge is lighter.
The wedge method
A V-shaped section is taken from the middle, and the edges are brought together. This keeps your natural border and texture intact, which many patients prefer. It suits women who want reduction without changing how the edge looks.
Neither is better. They suit different anatomy and different priorities, and choosing between them is the main thing your consultation is for. Both take one to two hours under local anaesthetic with sedation, or general anaesthetic if you prefer.

Who This Labiaplasty Surgery Suits
Almost every healthy adult woman is a candidate. The better question is whether surgery will actually solve what is bothering you, and that is what your surgeon works out at the consultation.
You are likely a good fit if:

Sometimes the honest answer is no. A few patients need a different procedure. A few need nothing at all, and hearing that from a surgeon is worth the appointment on its own.
On the Day of Labiaplasty Surgery
- You arrive fasted: if you are having a general anaesthetic. Your team will confirm the timings in advance.
- Your surgeon marks the tissue: with you awake and agreeing to it, before any anaesthetic. This step matters, and it is where symmetry is planned.
- Surgery takes one to two hours: Dissolvable stitches are used, so nothing needs removing later.
- You rest, then go home: Same day. Arrange for someone to drive you.
- You leave with written aftercare and a number to call if anything worries you.
Labiaplasty Recovery: Week by Week
Days 1 to 7
Swelling peaks around day three or four, and it usually looks worse than it feels. Cold compresses help. Rinse with warm water after using the bathroom rather than wiping. Wear loose cotton, rest, and avoid long periods sitting still. Most patients need three or four days off.
Week 2
Swelling drops noticeably and bruising fades. Light daily activity is fine. Still no exercise, no swimming, no intimacy.
Weeks 3 and 4
Most visible swelling has gone. Desk work is comfortable and you can walk normally. Keep away from the gym, cycling and anything with pressure or friction.
Weeks 5 and 6
Tissue strengthens and scars begin to soften. With your surgeon’s clearance, most patients return to exercise and intimacy at around six weeks.
Three months on
The final shape is settled. Residual swelling has resolved, and scars continue fading over the following months. Judge your result at this point, not at week two.
Will Labiaplasty Affect Sensation?
This is the question patients most want answered and least like asking, so here it is directly. Both techniques are designed to preserve nerve supply, and the areas responsible for sensation are not the target of the surgery. Some patients notice temporary numbness or heightened sensitivity while healing, and that settles as the tissue recovers.
Most women report intimacy becomes more comfortable afterwards, simply because the tissue that was catching or rubbing is no longer there. Your surgeon will talk this through properly at your consultation rather than brushing past it.
How Well Do Labiaplasty Scars Heal?
There will be a scar. It sits along the edge of the tissue or inside the fold depending on the technique, and it is usually very difficult to see once healed.
Scars look pink and firm for the first few months, then flatten and fade. How well they settle depends on your skin, your healing, and how carefully you follow aftercare in the first fortnight. Anyone telling you there is no scar at all is not being straight with you.
