Family Therapy

Family Therapy for Homes Under Strain

Families across Dubai come to Trusta Medical Center for one reason. We handle the whole picture, not one piece of it. Our psychiatry department in Dubai  covers family therapy, child assessments and individual treatment for parents, all in the same building. Constant conflict, silent houses, blended families, co-parenting after separation. Our therapists work with all of it, every week.

Our sessions are practical from the first appointment. You leave with things to use the same week, not theory. Arguments get shorter, recovery after them gets faster, and the pressure lifts off whoever has been carrying most of it. Everyone in the room is heard, including the youngest.

Family Therapy

Why Is Family Therapy Not Just About One Person?

Families usually arrive with a named patient. Fix him and we will be fine. We understand why, and we never say it out loud in front of the child, but that framing is almost always wrong.

A twelve-year-old who is refusing school, snapping at everyone and sleeping badly is often the most sensitive member of a stressed household. He is not the fault line. He is the pressure gauge. Take the pressure off the system and the behavior usually settles far faster than treating him alone ever would.

This is the single biggest shift families make with us, and it tends to happen in the first two sessions. It is also a relief. The child stops being the one with something wrong, and everyone gets to work on something together instead.

Family Therapy

Who Needs to Come to Family Therapy?

  • The first session usually works best with everyone who lives in the home.
  • Parents can attend sessions together when parenting concerns affect the family.
  • Children can join when their behaviour or emotions affect family life.
  • Teenagers can attend sessions focused on communication, anger, stress, or conflict.
  • One child can have an individual session when they need more privacy.
  • Parents may attend separate sessions to discuss parenting challenges.
  • Siblings can join when conflict between them needs attention.
  • Some sessions can include the whole family to practise better communication.
  • Other sessions can focus on one or two family members.
  • Younger children may need shorter or more focused sessions.
  • Teenagers may speak more openly without siblings in the room.
  • Parents can learn practical ways to support their child between sessions.
  • We choose the session format based on the family’s needs.

When a Teenager Refuses to Come

This happens weekly. It is not a reason to give up on the idea. Start with the parents. A lot changes in a household when the adults change how they respond, and teenagers notice that faster than they admit. Plenty of them join by the third or fourth week, once they can see the sessions are not a trap and nobody is being told off.

One piece of advice we give parents often. Do not sell it as therapy for them. Tell them the family is going, that everyone is involved, and that they can sit there and say nothing if they want to. Most do not stay silent for long.

What We Tell Parents, and What Stays Private

Parents ask this before anything else, and they deserve a clear answer rather than a vague reassurance. We agree with everyone, out loud, on what gets shared and what does not. Teenagers are told plainly where the line sits, because a young person who thinks everything goes straight back to their parents will tell you nothing worth hearing. Parents are told plainly too, so nobody feels shut out of their own child’s care.

The exception never changes. If we believe someone is at risk of harm, that is shared. We say so on day one so it is never a surprise later.

The Things That Strain Families

Family life here comes with pressures that do not exist in the same way elsewhere, and we treat them as part of the case rather than small talk.

Grandparents advise from another country by video call, which is loving and sometimes unhelpful. One parent travels constantly and comes home to rules they did not set. Helpers do much of the daily parenting, which works well until nobody is sure who is actually in charge. School pressure is genuinely intense here. And children raised in Dubai often grow up culturally different from the parents raising them, which produces arguments that look like disrespect and are really a translation problem.

None of that makes a family broken. It does mean the usual advice from back home lands badly, and we have sat with enough of these households to know the difference.

What We Work On

Parents Pulling in Opposite Directions

One says yes, the other says no, and the children learn exactly who to ask. We get parents onto the same page in private before anything gets announced to the kids. Where the relationship underneath is the real strain, couples therapy often runs alongside the family work.

A Child or Teenager Acting Out

Refusing school, aggression, withdrawal, grades falling off a cliff. We look at what the behavior is doing for them and what the house is doing to feed it. When a specific behavior needs targeted work, our behavior therapy treatment runs in parallel.

Siblings Who Cannot Be in the Same Room

Some rivalry is normal and healthy. Some of it is two children competing for a parent’s limited attention, which is a different problem with a different fix.

Blended Families

Step parents get handed responsibility without authority, and it goes wrong quietly. We work out who holds which role, what a step parent should and should not be enforcing, and how to give a child time to accept a new adult rather than demanding it on a schedule.

Separation and Co-Parenting

Parents can be finished with each other and still need to run a household together for another decade. We focus on keeping children out of the middle, since most of the lasting damage comes from the conflict rather than the separation itself.

Grief and Loss

Families often grieve in separate rooms, each one protecting the others by staying quiet. We bring that back into the open at a pace everyone can manage, including the children, who usually know far more than the adults believe.

When One Family Member Is Unwell

Depression, anxiety or a long illness reshapes a whole household. Roles shift, resentment builds, and nobody feels allowed to say so. Family sessions give that a place to be discussed without it becoming a betrayal.

Your First Appointment With Us

Step 1. Everyone gets a turn

Each person says how they see things, in their own words, without being corrected halfway through. For some families, this is the first time that has happened in years.

Step 2: We watch how you interact

Not just what is said. Who speaks for whom, who goes quiet, where the tension sits.

Step 3: We ask about the history

Moves, losses, separations, illnesses, arrivals. Families often forget how much has landed on them in a short space of time.

Step 4: We agree on what we are aiming at

Something specific. Getting through Friday dinner without someone leaving the table beats a goal like communicating better.

Step 5: We tell you how we would approach it

Who comes to which sessions, roughly how many, and whether anyone needs individual support alongside. Families tell us the first appointment is the eye-opener. Usually because everyone finally hears what the others have been carrying.

How Long It Usually Takes

Sessions run around sixty minutes, weekly at first. Family sessions sometimes run longer when several people are in the room, and we will tell you in advance if that applies.

Most families notice a change in the atmosphere at home within four to eight sessions. A full course tends to run somewhere between eight and twenty, depending on how long the pattern has been running and how many people are involved. Then we space sessions out and finish properly rather than letting it trail off.

When Family Therapy Is Not the Right Starting Point

We will say so if it is not. Where there is fear or violence in a household, joint sessions are not a safe place to begin, and individual support comes first. Where one family member has a condition that needs treating in its own right, we treat that first or alongside, because family sessions cannot do the job of proper clinical care. And if a family arrives purely to have a therapist confirm that one person is at fault, that is not what we do, and it is fairer to say so before you have paid for six appointments.

Fees, Insurance and Records

Many UAE plans now include mental health cover, usually with a set number of sessions per year and a co-payment. Family sessions are handled differently by different insurers, and cover often depends on whether one family member is being treated for a diagnosed condition. Send your policy details to reception before you come in, and you will get a straight answer instead of a surprise at the desk.

Your family’s file stays with us. Nothing goes to a school, an employer, or an extended family member without written permission.

Why Families Choose Trusta Medical Center

  • Everyone gets heard, including the youngest person present
  • Clear rules on privacy agreed with the whole family on day one
  • A mix of joint, parent-only, and individual sessions as needed
  • Psychiatric assessment in the same building when one member needs it
  • Practical targets you can actually notice at home
  • A calm, discreet Downtown Dubai clinic and confidential records

We work inside a full psychiatry department rather than as a standalone counselling room. When a child needs an assessment or a parent needs individual treatment, that happens here rather than at a clinic across town with a three-week wait.

our expert answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the therapist take my child's side?
No. The therapist works for the household, not for any one person in it. Expect the adults to be challenged and expect the children to be challenged too.
My child says nothing is wrong. Should I still come?
Yes. Come as parents if that is where you have to start. A great deal shifts when the adults change how they respond.
Is my child going to be labelled with something?
Family therapy is not a diagnostic process. If we think an assessment would genuinely help, we will explain why and you decide.
Do we all have to attend every week?
No. The mix changes as the work progresses, and we agree it with you rather than imposing it.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a wonderful experience at Trusta Medical Center. From the moment I arrived, the reception team was welcoming, professional, and very well organized. The entire clinic has a clean, elegant, and comfortable atmosphere, which immediately gives you a sense of confidence and trust. I was particularly impressed by their Aesthetic Medicine Department. The team takes the time to understand each patient’s concerns and expectations, and everything is explained clearly before making any decision. Their approach feels professional and patient-centered rather than commercial. The clinic also seems very selective in choosing its doctors. The medical team is experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely focused on achieving natural and appropriate results while maintaining high standards of safety. Another positive point was the transparency regarding prices and treatment options. Everything was explained clearly, with no unnecessary pressure to undergo additional procedures. Overall, Trusta Medical Center is an excellent polyclinic that combines professional medical care, hospitality, cleanliness, fair pricing, and highly qualified doctors under one roof. I would confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable medical center in Dubai, especially for aesthetic medicine. A truly five-star experience. Highly recommended. ❤️
