Chlamydia is the clearest example. It frequently sits silent for months, and untreated, it remains a leading preventable cause of blocked fallopian tubes and infertility. What We Test For in STI Screening
Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Testing
Both are bacterial, both are common, and both usually cause no symptoms in women. However, a urine sample or a swab detects them, and antibiotics clear them.
Left untreated, either can spread upward and cause pelvic inflammatory disease. As a result, that is what damages the fallopian tubes, so catching these early genuinely protects your fertility.
HIV and Syphilis Testing
Both need a blood sample. Modern HIV tests detect infection from around four weeks, although we confirm at twelve for certainty.
Similarly, syphilis is treatable at every stage, though treatment is simplest early. Overall, testing is straightforward and results come back quickly.
Herpes Testing
Best tested when a sore is actually present, because a swab from an active lesion is far more reliable than a blood test.
Blood testing exists for herpes; however, it tells you about past exposure rather than current infection. Therefore, your gynecologist will explain whether it would answer your question or simply raise more.
Hepatitis B and C Testing
Both blood tests. Hepatitis B is vaccine-preventable, so we can arrange vaccination afterwards if you are not immune. Meanwhile, hepatitis C is now curable in most cases with modern treatment.
Other Infections We Check
Trichomoniasis is a parasite, detected on a swab, and cleared with a short course of treatment. In addition, we also check for bacterial vaginosis and thrush where symptoms point that way, since both are far more common than any STI.
STI Panels and Full Sexual Health Screens
A panel checks several infections from one visit. It is efficient, although it has limits worth understanding.
No single panel covers every infection. Herpes usually sits outside standard panels. HPV is checked through cervical screening rather than an STI test. So, your gynecologist decides what to include based on your exposure and symptoms, instead of adding tests that will not tell you anything useful.

Treating yourself while an untreated partner remains infected simply means reinfection. So, your partner needs testing and, where relevant, treatment at the same time. Avoid sex until both of you have finished treatment and your doctor confirms it is clear.
In addition, we also recommend a repeat test a few months after treatment for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Reinfection is common, and a follow-up test is the only way to know.
