Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans We Offer
Different scan, different question. Timing matters on nearly all of them.
Early Pregnancy and Dating Scan, 6 to 8 Weeks
Three jobs. Confirm the pregnancy is inside the uterus, find a heartbeat, and date it properly.
That date then runs the rest of your pregnancy. Every appointment, every test, every scan window. Counting from your last period gets it wrong by a week or more surprisingly often, which matters later when the NT scan has a three-week window, and you have misdated by eight days.
What a 6 Week Pregnancy Ultrasound Shows
A gestational sac. A yolk sac. Sometimes a heartbeat, sometimes not.
No heartbeat at six weeks is common and usually means your dates are a few days off rather than anything else. We rescan in a week or ten days. Most of the time the answer changes, and nobody should be drawing conclusions from one scan this early.
Transvaginal Ultrasound in Early Pregnancy
Early on, the uterus sits too low and too deep for an abdominal probe to see much. A transvaginal probe gets far closer.
It takes about five minutes. Most patients say pressure rather than pain. Empty bladder for this one, unlike the abdominal scans.
NT Scan, Nuchal Translucency at 11 to 14 Weeks
Measures the fluid pocket at the back of your baby’s neck. Paired with a blood test, it produces a risk figure for Down syndrome and two other chromosomal conditions.
The window is fixed. Before 11 weeks, the measurement is unreliable; after 14 weeks, the fluid has usually resolved. Miss it, and the option is gone, so this is the one appointment worth booking ahead rather than fitting in.
It screens. It does not diagnose. A result gives you odds, not an answer.
Anomaly Scan at 18 to 22 Weeks
The long one. Brain, spine, skull, heart chambers, kidneys, stomach, abdominal wall, then limbs, fingers and toes. Placenta position and fluid levels get checked at the same time.
Allow longer than you would for a growth scan. Your sonographer works a fixed sequence and does not skip ahead, so there is no rushing this appointment.
Gender Scan, and When You Can Find Out
Reliably from 18 to 20 weeks. In practice, that means the anomaly scan is when most parents find out.
Some babies are clear at 16 weeks. Earlier than that, and the chance of being told the wrong thing climbs, which is a conversation nobody enjoys having at 30 weeks.
Tell your sonographer before she starts if you would rather not know. We can also write it down and seal it, which a fair number of parents ask for. Just say so at the beginning, because once she has seen it she has seen it.
Fetal Growth Scan in the Third Trimester
Measures size, position, and the fluid around your baby. Out of that comes an estimated weight and a centile. The centile on its own tells you less than parents assume, because the trend across two or three scans is the actual finding. Our fetal growth monitoring page goes through how the centiles work.
Doppler Ultrasound Scan
Measures blood flow through the umbilical cord and your baby’s main vessels. It answers a narrower question than a growth scan does, which is whether oxygen and nutrients are actually getting through.
We add it where growth has slowed, or where the pregnancy is high risk from the start.
3D and 4D Pregnancy Ultrasound
3D gives you a still with depth. 4D adds movement, so you watch rather than look.
Between 26 and 30 weeks is the sweet spot. Earlier, there is not much to see. Later, and your baby has run out of room to get a clear angle on the face.
These are bonding scans. Not diagnostic, and mostly booked for the pictures, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to want.
Twin and Multiple Pregnancy Ultrasound
More scans, closer together. We track each baby separately and establish early whether they share a placenta, because that single finding changes the whole monitoring plan.
Placenta Position and Cervical Length Scans
A placenta position scan shows where it has implanted. Low-lying changes how and when you deliver.
Worth knowing that most low placentas migrate upward as the uterus grows. So an early finding gets rechecked at 32 weeks rather than acted on at 20.
Cervical length is a separate measurement, used to judge the risk of early labour. Most useful if you delivered early before, or you are carrying twins.
Fetal Wellbeing Scan and Postdate Ultrasound
A wellbeing scan, also called a biophysical profile, scores four things together. Movement, breathing motion, muscle tone, fluid volume.
Past your due date, a postdate scan checks fluid and placental function so your obstetrician can decide what happens next, working with our delivery and childbirth services team.
Pregnancy Ultrasound Schedule by Trimester
Three or four scans cover most pregnancies.
- First trimester. Dating scan at 6 to 8 weeks. NT scan at 11 to 14.
- Second trimester. Anomaly scan at 18 to 22 weeks. Usually when you learn the sex.
- Third trimester. Growth scan, plus Doppler or a wellbeing assessment if indicated.
Gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, twins, or anything that went wrong last time adds to that list. Your specialist sets it at the first visit and revises it as things move.
How Many Ultrasound Scans Are Needed During Pregnancy?
No fixed number, and any clinic quoting one has not looked at your notes.
Three or four for a straightforward pregnancy. Closer monitoring runs to every two to four weeks in the third trimester. Your health, your history, and what the last scan showed.
If that sounds like a lot of scanning, it is worth knowing nothing accumulates. There is no exposure to add up, so a twelfth scan carries the same risk as the first.
Ectopic Pregnancy Ultrasound
Positive test, nothing visible in the uterus. That combination needs looking at the same week, not the next.
Diagnosis comes from three things read together. Whether there is a sac in the uterus. Whether you have pain or bleeding. And what your hCG is doing over 48 hours. Caught early, treatment is considerably simpler and safer.
High-Risk Pregnancy Ultrasound Monitoring
Some pregnancies need more scanning than the standard schedule. We add appointments for:
- Gestational diabetes or hypertension
- A previous preterm birth or complication
- Twins or higher multiples
- Reduced or unusual movement
- Suspected growth restriction
- A low placenta or short cervix
The schedule follows your actual risk. And it changes if your findings change, rather than staying fixed because it was written in month three.

Yes. Sound waves, not radiation. Nothing accumulates across scans.

Pregnancy Ultrasound Cost in Dubai
Depends which scan. A dating scan is the cheapest thing on the list. An NT scan with bloodwork, a full anomaly scan or a Doppler study all take longer and cost accordingly.
Most UAE maternity plans cover medically indicated scans. Dating, anomaly, growth. Elective 3D and 4D usually are not covered, because they are not clinically necessary and insurers know it.
