The mechanism sounds complicated. It really is not. A vaccine prompts your immune system to make antibodies. Those antibodies travel in your blood, and from around halfway through pregnancy they cross the placenta into your baby. Your baby then arrives already carrying protection against whatever you were vaccinated for.
It is borrowed immunity, and it lasts a few months. Which happens to be exactly the stretch before your baby is old enough for their own vaccines, and exactly when serious illness hits hardest.

Flu Vaccine
Pregnancy changes how your heart, lungs and immune system work. Flu therefore hits harder than it would have two years ago, and hospital admission figures among pregnant women show it. You can have the inactivated flu vaccine at any stage of pregnancy. In the UAE the season runs roughly from October through May, so timing usually follows that rather than your trimester.
Tdap Vaccine for Whooping Cough
Whooping cough is dangerous for newborns and it can be fatal in the early months. Your baby cannot have their own dose until around eight weeks old, which leaves a gap. We give Tdap between 27 and 36 weeks, and the window is not arbitrary. Antibody transfer across the placenta peaks then, so vaccinating then sends the most protection to your baby rather than just to you. Guidance recommends it in every pregnancy, even if you had it last time.
RSV Vaccine
RSV puts a lot of babies in hospital with chest infections every year. Newborns come off worst. Maternal RSV vaccination falls in a defined window, usually 28 to 36 weeks, and eligibility depends on timing and availability. Ask us at your appointment and we will confirm whether it applies to you.

Which Vaccines Are Not Given in Pregnancy
This gets searched more than anything else on the subject. So, plainly. We avoid live vaccines during pregnancy. That covers MMR, meaning measles, mumps and rubella, plus varicella for chickenpox and the shingles vaccine. HPV vaccination waits too.
If you lack immunity to rubella or chickenpox, you have that vaccination after delivery, and breastfeeding is no barrier. The simpler route is to know already. Immunity gets checked at your preconception care visit, and this is exactly why we ask couples to come in three months before trying.
If You Vaccinated Before Realising You Were Pregnant
This happens more than you would think, and it causes a lot of unnecessary worry. Tell us which vaccine and roughly when. Inactivated vaccines raise no concern at all. For live vaccines, evidence from women who were unknowingly pregnant looks reassuring, and no pattern of harm has emerged. Your obstetrician will go through it with you properly rather than leaving you to search for answers.
Travel Vaccines During Pregnancy
Worth a section of its own in a city where nearly everybody flies somewhere. You can have some travel vaccines in pregnancy, such as hepatitis A and typhoid, because both are inactivated. Others are live and you cannot, including yellow fever. That creates a genuine problem when your destination demands a certificate for entry.
So mention travel plans early, not a fortnight before you fly. There is usually a workable answer. It just takes time to arrange, and once in a while the honest advice is to pick somewhere else.
