Strong emotions can take over quickly. Anger can turn into an argument. Panic can make you shut down. A small comment can also trigger a reaction that feels much bigger than the situation. Emotion regulation therapy helps you understand these reactions and manage them before they affect your relationships, work, or daily life.
Our psychiatry team works with children, teenagers, and adults who struggle with anger, panic, emotional sensitivity, shutdown, numbness, or intense mood changes. We start with a proper assessment. Emotional changes can sometimes relate to anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, sleep problems, medication, or other health concerns. Identifying the cause helps us choose the right approach.
Emotion regulation therapy is not about feeling less. Nobody is going to talk you out of being angry or upset, and we would not want to. Those feelings are usually telling you something real.
What it does is give you a set of practical tools for the moment the feeling arrives. How to notice it early. Staying steady through intense emotions without reacting in ways you may regret. And underneath all that, how to spot the pattern that keeps putting you in the same state week after week.
The skills are drawn from established clinical work, mainly cognitive and dialectical approaches. They sound simple written down. Most of our patients find the first few weeks harder than expected, and then something clicks.
Almost every clinic writes about anger. That leaves out half the people who need this therapy. Plenty of our patients never raise their voice. They leave the room, stop replying to messages, go flat for two days and cannot explain why. Some feel nothing at all, which worries them more than feeling too much would. Others hold everything in perfectly all week, then cry at a small thing on a Friday night and feel ridiculous about it.
Shutdown is emotional dysregulation too. It is just quieter, so it goes untreated for far longer. If you recognise yourself in that description, this therapy is for you as much as it is for the person slamming doors.
Emotions are physical before they are anything else. Our patients describe a tight chest, a clenched jaw, shoulders sitting up near their ears, a stomach that reacts before they have registered being upset.
Sleep is usually the first thing to go. Lying awake replaying a conversation, waking at four with your heart going, dreading the alarm. It works in both directions, and poor sleep makes the next day’s reactions worse, so where that pattern has set in we look at sleep disorder treatment alongside the therapy rather than treating them as separate problems. The body tends to give a more honest account than memory does.
Come and talk to us if any of this is familiar:
You do not need a diagnosis to book. Working out what is going on is our job, not yours.
This is where being part of a full psychiatry department earns its keep.
Emotional volatility is not always a therapy problem. It can come from broken sleep, thyroid trouble, hormonal changes, undiagnosed ADHD, a medication you started three months ago, or grief that nobody around you acknowledged. Sending someone straight into skills training when one of those is driving it wastes months of their life and their money.
So we check first. If it is purely a skills gap, we start the skills. Either way you get a straight answer at the first appointment rather than after session eight.
Most people have three words for their emotional states. Fine, stressed, angry. That is not enough to work with. We widen the vocabulary because a feeling you can name accurately is far easier to manage, and because half of what people call anger turns out to be exhaustion, embarrassment or fear when they look closely.
Every wave of emotion has a top and a downside. The trouble is that most damage happens at the top, in the two minutes when it feels like it will never end. We teach you ways to stay put and let the wave pass. Nothing has to be solved at the peak, and almost nothing should be.
You cannot reason with yourself while your heart is racing. The body has to come down before the thinking comes back online. Breathing that actually works rather than the version people half remember, temperature changes, movement, and grounding techniques you can use in a meeting without anyone noticing.
Reactions usually sit on top of a belief. They are ignoring me. I have ruined this. Everyone can tell. We find those beliefs, hold them up to the light and check whether they hold. This is the part that overlaps most with our behavior therapy treatment, and some patients run the two together.
Regulation is not swallowing everything. It is being able to say the difficult thing at a moment when it will land properly. We practise this in the room, out loud, which feels awkward for about ten minutes and then stops feeling awkward at all.
Nothing dramatic happens on day one. Here is how it goes.
In your own words, at your own pace. No form to fill in while you talk.
What sets it off, where it happens most, who is usually there, and what time of day it tends to hit. Patterns show up quickly once someone is looking for them.
Everyone has coping strategies. Some of them are working. We would rather build on those than start you from zero.
Sleep, health, medication, anything else that could be feeding it.
Something specific and measurable. Getting through a full family dinner without leaving the table beats a vague goal like being calmer.
You leave that first appointment knowing what the problem is and what we plan to do about it. Most people say that alone made the visit worth it.
Children do not sit still and discuss their coping strategies, so we do not ask them to. Sessions use play, drawing, stories and simple games depending on age, and the skills go in sideways.
Parents learn alongside. That part is not optional and we are upfront about it. A child practises for one hour with us and lives the other hundred and sixty seven hours at home, so the adults around them need the same language. We show you what to say when a meltdown starts, and just as importantly, what to stop saying.
Teenagers get treated differently again. They are old enough to want privacy and old enough to spot an adult managing them. We give them room and involve parents at a level the teenager has agreed to.
Sessions run around fifty to sixty minutes, weekly to begin with.
Most patients feel the first shift somewhere between four and eight sessions. It is rarely dramatic. Usually someone notices they paused before answering, or that an argument that would once have taken three days to recover from was over the same evening. A full course tends to run twelve to twenty sessions, then spaces out.
Two things move that number. How long the pattern has been running, and how much you practise between appointments. The hour with us matters far less than the week around it, and we would rather tell you that at the start than pretend otherwise.
Anyone promising that is selling something. It will not fix a situation that genuinely needs fixing. If you are furious every evening because of how you are being treated, better regulation will help you handle it, but the treatment is not a substitute for changing the thing itself. We will say so plainly if that is what we see.
And where something more serious sits underneath, we will tell you and bring the right part of our psychiatry team in. Being honest about the limits of a treatment has cost us the occasional booking. It has also brought us most of our referrals.
Many UAE health plans now include mental health cover, usually with a set number of sessions each year and a co payment. Enhanced plans cover more than basic ones. Send your policy details to reception before you come in and you will get a clear answer rather than a surprise at the desk.
Your file stays with us. Nothing goes to an employer, a school or a family member without your written permission. We tell you what gets recorded before you start, because it is the question people most want answered and least like asking.
We sit inside a full psychiatry department rather than working as a standalone therapy room. If your care needs a psychiatric review along the way, you are not sent across the city to find one.
You do not have to arrive with the right words for it. Tell us what has been happening lately and our psychiatry team in Downtown Dubai will take it from there. Book your first session and let us work out together what is driving it and what actually helps.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a wonderful experience at Trusta Medical Center. From the moment I arrived, the reception team was welcoming, professional, and very well organized. The entire clinic has a clean, elegant, and comfortable atmosphere, which immediately gives you a sense of confidence and trust. I was particularly impressed by their Aesthetic Medicine Department. The team takes the time to understand each patient’s concerns and expectations, and everything is explained clearly before making any decision. Their approach feels professional and patient-centered rather than commercial. The clinic also seems very selective in choosing its doctors. The medical team is experienced, knowledgeable, and genuinely focused on achieving natural and appropriate results while maintaining high standards of safety. Another positive point was the transparency regarding prices and treatment options. Everything was explained clearly, with no unnecessary pressure to undergo additional procedures. Overall, Trusta Medical Center is an excellent polyclinic that combines professional medical care, hospitality, cleanliness, fair pricing, and highly qualified doctors under one roof. I would confidently recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable medical center in Dubai, especially for aesthetic medicine. A truly five-star experience.
